Conserving water is both good for the environment and good for your wallet. If you’re looking for a few easy tips to scale back your water bill, look no further!
Turn Off the Faucet
Let’s face it, most people are not in a state of heightened awareness first thing in the morning or late at night. While brushing your teeth, it is quite easy to leave the faucet running without giving it a second thought. Though there are a couple of numbers to keep in mind when you find yourself doing this. On average, most people spend about 2 minutes brushing their teeth (hopefully). The flow rate of a typical bathroom faucet is between 1 and 1.5 gallons per minute. This means, on average, leaving your faucet running wastes between 2 and 3 gallons of water per day. This may not immediately seem all that wasteful. However, this number scales up to over 900 gallons of water wasted per year.
Consider Switching to a Dishwasher
Washing dishes by hand often requires the faucet to continuously run for the purpose of rinsing. A way to remedy this situation if you have a two-compartment sink is to fill one compartment with clean water for rinsing. Though, if this isn’t an option for you, it may be a wise decision to scale up to a dishwasher. Assuming you fully maximize the efficiency of your dishwasher by filling it up completely before each cycle, it can be far more efficient than hand washing.
Fix the Leaks
It probably goes without saying, but leaky faucets are more than just a minor annoyance. Over time, they can really elevate the amount of water your waste and drive your water bill up. In some situations, leaky faucets can be fixed by the average handyman, though if you’re not very familiar with plumbing, it may be a good idea to bring in a professional.
