A wire hanger is a DIY solution for unclogging drains. One of the most common myths is that you can take a metal wire hanger, uncoil it, bend it at an angle, and use it as a sort of makeshift drain snake. Not only will this method more than likely prove ineffective, but there’s a good chance that you will end up scraping your pipes, which can lead to bigger problems later on.
Drain cleaners that you buy in the store will take care of clogs. Drain cleaners do sometimes clear out clogs, but in many cases, they don’t really solve the problem and can even create issues. The chemicals in these products can actually cause porcelain to crack or lead to leaks or bursts in compromised pipes.
Flushable wipes are safe to flush. Despite their branding, we do not recommend that you flush “flushable” wipes. They cause similar clogs to paper towels, tampons, and baby wipes. These should always be thrown out into the garbage.
A plunger is enough for every clog. Don’t get us wrong; a plunger can really come in handy in many respects. However, certain sink or toilet clogs just won’t budge with a traditional plunger. Sinks especially don’t respond well to a plunger, and if you’ve used drain cleaner, it’s possible you could kick up chemicals. Plumbing repairs like these clogs should be handled by a professional. |
